Shropshire (Salop or Shrops) is an inland county in the West Midlands of England,it is bounded on the North West by Denbighshire, on the North by Flintshire and Cheshire, on the East by Staffordshire, on the South by Worcestershire, Herefordshire, and Radnorshire, and on the West by Montgomeryshire and Denbighshire. Shropshire is one of England's most rural and sparsely populated counties.
The chief rivers of Shropshire are the
a. Severn, cuting the county nearly through the middle of county and has been used for the transportation of goods and services for centuries.
b. Vyrnwy, running on part of the western boundary to the Severn
c. Tern and the Worf, running to the Severn respectively near Atcham and Bridgnorth
The Ironbridge Gorge area of Shropshire is known as the birthplace of industry and there are other notable industrial sites located around the county.
The modern county boundaries of Shropshire are the same as the historic ones, except for the removal of several exclaves and enclaves, and some minor alterations along the borders with Herefordshire and Worcestershire. |
